Semester Long Design Project - Plant Paradise

Project type

Sustainability

Location

New York

As part of the introduction to engineering course, I led a group in the development of a sensor-integrated greenhouse optimized for rapid assembly and sustainable indoor agriculture. The goal was to create a portable greenhouse system that could monitor environmental conditions and support adaptable plant growth in compact or mobile settings.

We designed the physical components in SolidWorks and Fusion 360, applying the engineering design process and lean manufacturing, focusing on structural efficiency, ease of transport, and low material cost. Recycled materials from the MakerSpace scrap bin to reduce cost. Integrated sensors for temperature, humidity, and soil moisture, along with LED lighting to support photosynthesis.

Led prototyping and testing, refining the design based on performance and system feedback. Oversaw budgeting and parts procurement, successfully keeping the total cost below our original projection. Able to select lower cost but better durability materials that also provides a high insulation and light transmission.

Presented our final design to faculty and peers, receiving top marks for innovation.

This project deepened my understanding of the lean manufacturing process, strengthened my leadership, and gave me hands-on experience with prototyping — all while addressing a real-world problem in sustainability.
